Shifting Perspectives: A Journey from Self-Negativity to Empowerment
Life has a curious way of throwing unexpected curveballs, often leaving me reeling in their wake. For me, that defining moment came in the form of a devastating crash, one that altered the trajectory of my life forever. The injuries sustained, including an acquired brain injury, not only challenged my physical capabilities but also plunged me into a whirlwind of self-negativity.
In the aftermath of the crash, all I could see were the limitations imposed upon me by my injuries. Every day felt like a battle against my own mind, as I grappled with feelings of inadequacy and frustration. It seemed as though my world had been reduced to a series of “can’ts” and “won’ts,” overshadowing any semblance of hope or positivity.
However, life has a remarkable way of offering glimpses of light even in the darkest of times. Four years after the crash, a trip to Florida with Cathy’s eight-year-old granddaughter changed my perspective in ways I never imagined. This spirited young soul, born two years after the accident, saw me through a lens of pure admiration and awe. At first, I dismissed her compliments as mere “kid-talk,” unable to fathom how someone could view me in such a positive light given my self-perceived limitations.
Little did I know, her innocent words would serve as a catalyst for a profound shift in my outlook on life. Upon returning from the trip, fate intervened in the form of Kerry Goulet, a retired professional hockey player and the founder of StopConcussions.com, a Not-for-Profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about concussions.
In a moment of vulnerability, I shared with Kerry the encounter with the young girl and my skepticism regarding her perspective of me. His response was nothing short of revelatory. With a sincerity that resonated deep within me, Kerry emphasized that it is the perspective that truly matters. Despite having just met me, he saw beyond my injuries and recognized the inherent value within me. In his eyes, I was nothing short of awesome.
Those simple yet profound words shattered the walls of self-doubt that had confined me for so long. It was a poignant reminder that our worth is not defined by our perceived limitations but rather by the essence of who we are as individuals. In that moment, I realized that true empowerment stems not from what we can or cannot do, but from how we choose to perceive ourselves and our circumstances.
My change in perspective is akin to looking at a lemon. Initially, one might see it as sour and unwelcome. However, by shifting one’s perspective, that lemon becomes the precursor to something wonderful—pre-lemonade, if you will—a symbol of transformation and potential. Similarly, by embracing a new outlook on life, I discovered the sweetness that lay hidden within my perceived challenges.
Today, as I reflect on my journey from self-negativity to empowerment, I am reminded of the transformative power of perspective. It is a reminder that amidst life’s trials and tribulations, there exists an inherent beauty in embracing the uniqueness of our journey and finding strength in our perceived vulnerabilities.
In sharing my story, I hope to inspire others who may find themselves grappling with similar challenges to look beyond their limitations and embrace the boundless potential that resides within them. For it is only when we shift our perspective that we can truly unlock the extraordinary possibilities that await us on the other side of adversity.

Perspective is so important in life. Thank you for these communications, Robert.
While the basis of it was Elizabeth, it truly was Kerry (Goulet) who was who “did it.” That’s why I always do my absolute best to always tune in when he has something to say online.
Robert, having known you now both pre- and post-injury, all I can say is that you are a man of great integrity. And the evolution from limitation to empowerment is the journey we are all on. Self-limiting beliefs are set our way by circumstance and negative circumspection. It is beautiful that Kerry was able to break through that shell and open a new vista of perspectives. Sometimes new knowledge doesn’t just liberate the mind, it liberates the soul. So proud of your efforts to bring your ever-evolving perspective to others, dear friend.
I was COMPLETELY blown away when he’d said that, to him I’m awesome, because in the very-dark place that I was in, I thought very-negative things about myself/
Rob, on a personal note, I also wanted to share something you did when we communicated regularly. Whenever you replied to me, you started with James!! It was so uplifting to see those exclamations marks! I’ve continued that tradition in communicating with dear friends. Every time I think of you, I remember those exclamation marks and how they made me feel special being in touch with you.
To me it was just how I felt, because everything that you were about was exciting, which is why I used ” !! ” because that’s how I felt!
It is truly amazing how perspective and positivity can change lives! Thank you for sharing your story
